General Cleaner

A general cleaner’s duties are to perform and oversee a variety of janitorial and/or custodial tasks to maintain clean and safe buildings.

JANITORS AND CLEANERS keep office buildings, factories, hospitals, schools, and other places clean. They sweep, vacuum, mop and wax floors, clean carpets, dust and polish furniture, clean and supply restrooms, collect and throw out trash, wash walls and ceilings, replace lights, and polish metal work. Janitors and Cleaners must know how to use chemical cleaners and power equipment to keep from harming or damaging floors and fixtures. General Cleaners are responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that municipal buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner.

Duties and Responsibilities
The duties include but are not limited to:
  1. Clean and care for buildings and facilities in order to ensure they are maintained in a safe and healthy manner.
  2. Maintain storage areas and cleaning equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and orderly manner in order to ensure the safety of staff and the public.
  3. Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge
The employee must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Ability to work under little supervision.

Working Conditions
Janitorial work is often done at night when the building is closed. The employee must be able to work alone. The work may be hard. The employee may be ex posed to irritating cleaning detergents. Janitors and Cleaners may be assigned to work shifts when 24 - hour service is needed. The work is usually done inside buildings which are heated and well - lit. Sometimes they may work outdoors sweeping walkways and picking up rubbish.
Physical Requirements
The General Cleaner is a physically demanding position. The employee must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors and moving desks and furniture. The employee is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Operating floor polishers and waxers are particularly hard on back muscles.

The General Cleaner works on a daily basis with dangerous and tox ic cleaning products that can be very harmful to ones health if not properly utilized. In some cases these products give off unpleasant odors. The Custodial also regularly has to clean up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal wi th. The condition of washrooms is often unpleasant.
